Rave Transcendence

An exploration of the rave as a site of transcendence and immanence. I wanted to understand how I could trigger states of obliteration and meditation, and how rave created a shared audio-visual-sensorial language.

I aimed to create immersive art that would guide my audience into a state of obliterative meditation/meditative obliteration). This collection emerged from both frustration at being unable to attend raves and festivals under lockdown, and personal grappling with matters of spirituality and existence.

Rave emboldened me to embrace colour, light, movement, body, and sound. The use and repetition of these elements in rave forms a kind of mantra, a tool for unlocking meditative states. Communion, collage, synaesthesia – despite the culturally-bound nature of semiotics, these keys in tandem point towards a semiotics of rave which seeks to establish a universal language.

My collection of jewellery, video, and images seeks to access this universal language in order to trigger an experience of transcendence and immanence, even if only for the briefest moment.
